Iowa DNR staff hosted the NCD Ictalurid Technical Committee’s Age and Growth Workshop at Lake Rathbun Hatchery in June.  Dave Buckmeier (TX Parks and Wildlife Department) and Earl Buckner (MO Department of Conservation) led the workshop which was a good mix of lecture and hands on activities.  Thirty five participants from ten different agencies spent two days learning how to extract and process pectoral spines, otoliths and vertebrae.  Topics such as annuli identification, personnel training and quality control were also discussed.  Everyone agreed the workshop was a success.  Many thanks to Iowa DNR staff for their hospitality.  If you have questions about the workshop, contact Greg Pitchford at 660/646-6122.

Dear MoAFS,

I would like to thank you for reimbursing me for the registration fees used to attend the North Central Division Ictalurid Age and Growth Workshop.  I can assure you that it was money well spent.

The workshop was a great educational opportunity.  By listening to all of the attendees discuss importance, efficiency, and ease in aging fish, I was able to learn a great deal.  In addition, I was lucky enough to meet several individuals from around the region who had outstanding experience in the subject at hand.

In the lab, I was able to learn to prepare fish to be aged.  I became skillful in removing both otoliths and pectoral spines.  Then we all saw several methods of cutting spines and mounting otoliths.  Later, we were shown how to read the otoliths and spines.  Then, we were given otoliths from known-age fish to confirm that we were aging correctly.  In all, I was able to walk away with some experience and a lot more knowledge in aging catfish.

Thanks again for such a wonderful opportunity.

Sincerely,

  Jim Baker
