Mary Fabrizio becomes AFS President 2008

The AFS Equal Opportunities Section annually solicits contributions to assist students from underrepresented groups in their travels to the AFS Annual Meeting.  Typically, Sections and Chapters have given $100 to $500. A contribution would enable us to continue ensuring that minority and female students will be able to travel to annual conferences and develop professionally through associations with AFS. These awards are entirely dependent on annual contributions from AFS units and external organizations.

Over the past six years, we have facilitated distribution of $15,500 to support travel through a $500 award to 29 students from 22 institutions in 6 countries (see attachment). Several of these students have gone on to serve AFS as unit officers.

Each year, the section provides a forum so that these students can converse with seasoned professionals and AFS officers, who assist them in meeting people and encourage the students to feel at home within the AFS and fisheries profession. These luncheons have included joint events with other Sections.
