High honor for Lee RedmondMissouri’s own Lee Redmond was recently inducted into the National Fisheries Hall of Excellence. Here is the contents of the plaque that honors Lee:![]() Lee C. RedmondLee Redmond received his Master’s Degree in Fisheries Science at the University of Missouri in 1964. His career with the Missouri Department of Conservation began in 1963 as a fisheries research biologist, in 1967 Lee was promoted to statewide Fisheries Management Supervisor and became Assistant Chief of Fisheries in 1986. Lee is best known for his work studying dynamics of fish populations and effects of regulation changes. He guided Missouri’s fisheries management program as it expanded from 2 to 64 full time biologists and more than 70 temporary employees. Lee joined the American Fisheries Society in 1962, is a certified Fisheries Scientist and a Life Member. He has been very active at all levels of the Society. He is also a charter member of the Missouri Chapter. In 1982, Lee received the Missouri Chapter’s Award of Excellence, its highest recognition. Nationally, Lee has been a member of the following sections: Fisheries Administrators, Fish Culture, Introduced Fish, Socio-economic, Genetics and Fisheries Management. Lee served as President of the North Central Division in 1989-90. He was active in establishing the Fish Management Section, which became the Society’s largest section, and was its first President-Elect. Lee received Fisheries Management Section’s Award of Merit for his efforts in the “Role of Fish Culture in Fishery Management Symposium”. He served two years as Associate Editor of the North American Journal of Fisheries Management. In 1994-95, Lee served as President of the American Fisheries Society. Lee’s contributions to the management of warm water stream and impoundment fisheries will be remembered by resource managers. Missouri’s aquatic resources and AFS benefited from Lee’s leadership. The Missouri Department of Conservation and the Fisheries Management Section through his influence developed into the national leaders for fisheries management that they are known for today. Elected into the “NATIONAL FISHERIES HALL OF EXCELLENCE”, 2001, Executive Committee, Fisheries Management Section, American Fisheries Society. Lee wanted to thank all those who initiated and supported his nomination for this honor.
