A Note From F.A.S.S

The Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences Society is a student organization who's goal is to promote interactions and activities that will allow members interested in aquatic sciences to develop professionally and to involve members in matters important to the preservation, conservation, and enhancement of aquatic resources in Missouri. We are the first student sub unit of the Missouri American Fisheries Society. F.A.S.S. is dedicated to helping future fisheries and aquatic professionals expand their horizons. In the past few years our group has not been very active, but we are working on becoming more involved. We have increased our groups numbers and are eager to get involved in more activities. Some activities we have participated in this year include the Missouri River Clean Up in October, also many of our members helped with the registration desk at the Missouri Natural Resource Conference. F.A.S.S. participated in the School of Natural Resources Field Day which exposed students to the various fields of work in natural resources. Brian Canaday was kind enough to show the students how electrofishing works. In the past F.A.S.S. has had guest speakers from the Missouri Department of Conservation, the Columbia Environmental Research Center, and the University itself. This year we had Bob Distefano and Steve Fischer speak to us on our involvement with MOAFS. Denny Ballard, executive director of the Missouri Conservation Federation also spoke to us about citizen conservation in Missouri. F.A.S.S. is stream team #442, we are planning a litter pick up on Clear Creek on April 22nd. We are also in the process of getting our Hook & Cook Fund Raising fishing tournament set up for next fall. F.A.S.S. is once again an active group and we are looking forward to becoming even more active in the future. We can be found on the web at www.snr.missouri.edu/~fass.

Midwest Student Conclave

Attention all fisheries students and potential fisheries students throughout the AFS - North Central Division. Are you interested in participating in a future Student Conclave? Interested in meeting students from other universities throughout the North Central Division? Looking for a chance to present your data ... preliminary results, final results, designing a project? Here is your chance!

One of my plans as NCD First VP is to develop such a Student Conclave within the NCD. What I envision is arrival on a Friday afternoon, sessions / presentations on Sat, and depart on Sunday. Obviously I can't do it without some input from you! I would be most appreciative if you would take a few minutes and reply to the following questions:

1 - Are you interested in participating in a NCD Student Conclave: YES or NO.

2 - If NO ... why not?

3 - If YES, when is the best time of year to hold such a function? a) Fall semester (late Sept/early Oct); b) part of Midwest Fish & Wildlife Conference (early December); c) mid-winter; or d) spring (April?).

4 - Would you be willing to serve on a committee for the meeting?

5 - What is a good place to hold such a meeting? Wisconsin is the most central location (Wyalusing State Park in Prairie Du Chien is one possible option).

6 - What else would you like included on the agenda?

Please answer these questions in an email to me or use this form and mail me your response.

Please feel free to contact me at 573/882-9880, x-3271 or fischsa@mail.conservation.state.mo.us.

Thanks!

Steve Fischer

NCD First Vice-President
